Student achievement is directly influenced by parent involvement and community engagement

For Parents

At American Schools, we actively encourage parents to engage with their child’s learning and are leading the way by becoming the first schools in Sweden to introduce a parental engagement strategy into all our schools.

This provides opportunities for parents to engage with their child’s learning and develop a better understanding of engagement strategies and their child’s learning needs.

We want the best for your child, and by working in partnership we can successfully enrich your child’s journey through American Schools.

Keeping parents and community members involved in the educational process is the key to student success

STEAM Parental Engagement Program

Close communication is at the core of our partnership approach. Keeping guardians in the loop regarding their child’s progress is an essential part of what we do. From consultation evenings and written reports, to an “open door” policy which ensures parents can speak with us at any stage, we keep those all-important channels of communication wide open.

Research has shown that the single biggest reason a child does well at school is the support of parents who take a real, active and consistent interest in their child’s education at home.

As a parent (or guardian) of a student enrolled in AS you are automatically a member of the PTA. PTA supports the American School staff in a range of ways – by organising class functions, assisting with displays, supporting children with reading, sport, school development and excursions.

Every STEAM school has developed its own engagement programm to suit the particular needs of their community. However, certain basics are expected from every STEAM school. This includes:

  • Recognising the central role of parents in the teaching and learning and process;
  • Informing parents of student study programs in advance so they can offer support where necessary;
  • Providing the tools, resources and guidance parents need to support their child’s learning;
  • Receiving a minimum amount of face-to-face contact with teachers during the school year;
  • The creation of a parents’ association to help the school spread best practices to all parents.

American School is adapting courses, both during the regular school day and after school, that allow students to learn in their communities. The aim of these courses is to more fully engage students, by harnessing their natural interest in where and how they live and by using their own community as a source of learning and action.
